Multi-racial participation in basketball c’ships

BASKETBALL is now played by all races and no longer dominated by the Chinese only, says Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong.

Ossia World of Golf — the organisers of the AND1 Streetball Challenge — has played a major role in the transformation and promotiong of basketball at the grassroot level, making it a level playing field.

Swee Leong, a former Thomas Cupper, said that when the challenge started six years ago, there were more Chinese players taking part in competitions and playing the sport “but the scenario has now changed”.

“This is very good for the development of the sport as it is played now in every nook and corner in townships.

“Now it is not only played by various races but it is also popular in government schools.

“Today, I can see Africans, Indians, Malay girls and boys all having a go at basketball — playing in this tournament, taking part in the shooting competition or taking part in the ‘In Search of the Freestylists’ event,’’ said Swee Leong, who was at the recent grand final where 241 teams took part in the AND1 Streetball Challenge held in Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur last Sunday.

Also present was Star Publications Bhd chief events officer Iris Tan who gave away prizes to the winners.

Swee Leong said the recent challenge saw a busload of 50 Malay girls coming to take part in the event.

“I visited a public school in Putrajaya and the basketball court there is of good quality. This school has a Chinese basketball coach to train the students.

“This sport promotes unity among all races. In the past, parents used to drop off their children for our tournament.

“Today, parents could be seen at the sidelines watching the matches and talking to other parents about the sport. Interest in this sport has also grown among adults,’’ he said.

AND1 Streetball Challenge has grown by leaps and bounds as players are playing in two basketball competitions instead of one.

There are also games such as wall-climbing activities, In Search of Freestylist and shooting hoop competitions where participants and spectators can win attractive prizes including cellphones and a basketball.

Swee Leong said Ossia was looking to organise this event in other states to promote the sport.

“We are looking to hold a leg in Kelantan next year,’’ he said.

The grand final will have five categories — boys’ Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18, men’s Under-25 and girls’ Under-18.

The challenge is sanctioned by Malaysia Basketball Association (Maba).

The sponsors are Milo (official beverage); Star Metro (official media); One FM (official radio) and Berjaya Times Square (official venue sponsor) while Celcom Axiata is the co-sponsor.

THE Cempaka International School junior cagers were already in motion going through the warm-up session for almost an hour as they prepared to greet the special coaching crew at their school in Cheras recently.

Although they sweated it out under the watchful eyes of their coach Kan Kim Loon before their guests’ arrival from the local NBL Academy based in Klang, they did not show signs of fatigue in stepping up to tackle challenges in their workout.

In contrast, the group comprising more than 20 eager trainees raised the tempo in accepting the stimulating ways introduced by the academy’s head coach Toto Zamar and his assistant Nathaniel Salanga. The school captain Khong Dick Mun, said it was a great learning experience for them.

“It is always interesting to add different ideas in improving our game. We are very fortunate because we were offered a rare chance to pick up valuable pointers and understand the game better,” added the 17-year-old student, who has featured in the school team in district meets over the past three years.

The AND1 Streetball Challenge organisers requested for the duo from the Philippines to share the training methods in their bid to get the youngsters pumped up as they gear up for the three-on-three basketball grand finals scheduled at the Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 11.

Before they get into the thick of the action, Toto assured the youngsters that everyone will be engaging in various exciting drills designed to enhance their skills development.

For an energetic start, he did not pull back in encouraging and urging his charges to show more aggression in their defensive duties.

“It is easier to be charging forward in attack but it is tough to acquire the art of defending cleverly. In forcing a turnover, it is important to get into the right position with steady stance. They need to pressure and apply various tactics to gain possession of the ball,” said Toto, who also enlightened them with the formation in moving the ball around to execute the sequence of threatening passes.

For the upcoming challenge sanctioned by Malaysia Basketball Association (Maba), the organisers are expecting a total of 200 teams to sign up in five separate categories including boys’ Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18; girls’ Under-18 and men’s Under-25.

Among the partners are Milo (official beverage), StarMetro (official Media), One FM (official radio), Berjaya Times Square (official venue sponsor) and Celcom Axiata (co-sponsor).

The registration fee is RM90 per team. Entry closes Sept 7.

Each player will receive an AND1 jersey and each team will be given an AND1 basketball.

The top four teams in each category will be rewarded with prizes for their feats.

FORMER international Tan Kee Hian held an exciting training session for the basketball players at the Sekolah Seri Puteri in Cyberjaya recently.

Despite fasting, about 50 students from the school went through the two-hour training session with enthusiasm.

“The girls certainly surprised me. They had warmed up and were waiting for the coaching clinic to start. As they were fasting, I also took a decision — not to drink any water until the training session was over.

“The girls had the basics. So it was quite easy for me to communicate with them,” said Kee Hian.

The coaching programme was initiated by Ossia World of Golf, in conjunction with the grand final of the AND1 Streetball Challenge at the Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 11.

The coaching session started with the fundamental drills, introduced by former national coach Bruce Wilson.

Kee Hian and his assistant Loh Sing Wei then went on to display the various techniques in basketball.

“In basketball, you must be good in both defence and attack. You must be able to stop your opponent from charging ahead. At the same time you must also have the skills to attack,” said Kee Hian to the students.

There was also a shooting skills practice for the students. Sekolah Seri Puteri basketball teacher Norazmi Mohd Azhari said they were thankful to Ossia World of Golf for initiating the programme.

“Basketball can be considered as a core sport in the school. The girls are active and had represented the school and district in age-group competitions,” said Norazmi.

The school also have a qualified coach in Kan Kim Loon. Under the guidance of Kim Loon, daily training sessions are held.

Sekolah Seri Puteri had also taken part in the High Schools Invitational basketball championships in Port Dickson.

“We had teams from Singapore and Indonesia and we managed to finish third. The girls are looking forward to the grand finals. We will be sending about 15 teams for the event.

“There will not be any players from Forms Three and Five as they will be sitting for their PMR and SPM examinations,” said Kim Loon.

Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said they were expecting about 200 teams for the grand final.

“Due to logistic reasons we can accommodate more teams. We urge the teams to register early to avoid disappointment,” said Swee Leong.

The grand final will have five categories – boys Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18, men’s Under-25 and girls’ Under-18.

The challenge is sanctioned by Malaysia Basketball Association (Maba).

250 teams take part in first leg of AND1 challenge Wednesday May 4, 2011

THE 6th AND1 Streetball Challenge held under the new format attracted a record participation of 250 teams.
The number of entries surpassed the organiser’s, Ossia World of Golf, expectation by almost double as they were expecting only 150 teams to take part in the challenge held at AEON (Jusco) Bukit Tinggi in Klang on Sunday.
Ossia World executive director Saw Swee Leong said the new two-baskets format was introduced for the first time.

Keen competition: The introduction of the full court format this year has made the tournament more competitive.

In the past, he said, there was only one basket and half a court for both teams to play.
“Under the new format, the teams will attack the opponents’ goal and it requires the players to be more competitive and fitter since they have to do more running,’’ he said.
Due to the lack of space since the new format required a full court for every match, the number of courts was increased from four to five.
Saw was happy that the competition had attracted a good number of non-Chinese players.
He said this showed that AND1 had made a great impact among the students regardless of race.
“We are happy that we have been able to promote basketball among the youngsters through the streetball challenge,’’ he said.

The champions are The Warriors (Under-13), DNA Fire (Under-15), Pearl A (Under-18) and GVK (Under-21). The girls’ Under-18 tie was won by Jen Yu.
The winners were presented with AND1 products including shoes and basketballs as part of their winning prizes.
The AND1 Streetball Challenge is sanctioned by the Malaysian Basketball Association (Maba). The sponsors are Milo (official beverage), StarMetro (official media) and One FM (official radio).
Following the challenge in Klang, it will be held at Sutera Mall, Johor (May 28); Summit USJ (July 3); Esplanade, Penang (July 24) and the Grand Finals in Times Square, Kuala Lumpur (Sept 11).

Thrills and spills at streetball challenge

RUSSIAN student Andre Slepov bears an uncanny resemblance to the illustrious streetballer Grayson “The Professor’’ Boucher of the AND1 MixTape but he opted not to share the maestro’s limelight at this season’s AND1 Streetball Challenge grand finale at the Berjaya Times Square on Sunday.
For the past two years, the 20-year-old chemical engineering student at the Universiti Teknologi Petronas could easily mislead the three-on-three basketball event fans here into thinking of him as The Professor when both had similar short haircuts. The Professor decided on a change in his hairstyle this year while Andre is sporting a longer version of the crew cut. After receiving the compliment that he looks like The Professor in the past, Andre felt that it would be awkward to allow the spectators to make the same mistake in perceiving him as The Professor when the real star is in town.

“It was also an opportunity for me to display a different image and personality,” he added.
Andre, who admires the MixTape, said Volume Seven was the only visual missing from the 10 series of his MixTape collection.
“I have been watching The Professor’s moves and trying to imitate his slick tricks.
“As a key figure in the MixTape team, he has been inspiring streetballers around the world to create their own routines,” added Andre.
Although Andre did not get a chance to have a shot at becoming the top three freestylists of the season, he was excited with the rare treat to catch a top class act live and rub shoulders with The Professor.

“I did not make it into the final of the freestyle contest because I missed the two earlier qualifying legs held in the Klang Valley,” he said.In the In Search of Freestylists competition, previous winners Tan Soon Chern, Yap Tee Shen, Lam Wei Ken and Mohd Ismadi Hamidi also turned up to support the contenders.
A total of 10 hopefuls from 13 qualifiers featured in the contest offering one-year basketball products sponsorship worth RM3,000 each to the top three performers. Rookie Wan Muhd Nazrin Wan Abdul Rahim from SMK Seksyen 11, Shah Alam was part of the winning trio in his first final while Scalia Anorea Nethanial of SMK Taman Maluri and factory worker Law Chin Hui from Johor needed two and three attempts respectively for their triumph.
The 19-year-old Chin Hui showed his commitment when he travelled all the way to secure his place in the final at the third leg at Bandar Bukit Tinggi in Klang.
“I am glad that I have finally accomplished my aim to be among the top three finishers.
“I had fun going up against Scalia in the one-on-one round. And both of us came through today,” he added.
And The Professor making his solo debut appearance at the challenge also took the chance to address the misconception regarding streetball and his venture in conducting ball-handling clinics starting from late last year.
“We need to correct the streetball’s bad reputation because it is considered as not the real basketball.
“It is a common error for aspiring streetballers to jump into performing the tricks after watching the visual on a certain move.
“They have to acquire sound fundamentals in basketball before moving on to perform the tricky deceptions.
“It is not enough just to ‘flash’ (show off) the predictable fancy moves. They will become more threatening when they combine the dazzling actions with the ability to go for the basket and score points,” said the 26-year-old Professor, who left Malaysia to join his MixTape Tour teammates in Japan yesterday.
Nigerian student Abdus Salam Muyibi was the sharp shooter of the day netting nine shots to emerge as the champion in the Best Shooter side event.
Former Nigerian junior cager Micheal Ogheneme also teamed up with his HELP University College countryman Ahmed Temitope to thrill the spectators with a series of gravity defying slam dunks.
Meanwhile, the organisers wrapped up the seventh edition of the challenge with a total of 320 sides joining the fray in the six categories.
The top three teams in each category were rewarded with basketball shoes and goodies.

Key cagers hog the limelight at streetball challenge

THE key players from both teams in the boys’ Under-14 final shared the limelight at the AND1 Streetball Challenge grand finale at the Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur recently.
Although eventual champions Davidson came through in edging Rapid 4-1 for the top spot in the three-on-three basketball contest, former international Tan Kee Hian spotted a budding cager from each side as the recipients of StarMetro’s Promising Players.
The duo of Lai Yong Xin from Davidson and Rapid’s Foo Ting Jun impressed Kee Hian with their exceptional attributes in leading their side to finish as the winners and runners-up respectively.

“It was an easier decision to pick him (Yong Xin) because he was part of the victorious team. He stood out with his outstanding display in helping his side triumph in the encounter. He also showed good leadership quality in providing his side with the winning momentum,” said Kee Hian.
On the other hand, Ting Jun was voted for showing great effort in putting up a fight in the decisive match.
“He is not as skilful. But, he tried to turn things around. It was unfortunate that his team went down on that occasion,” Kee Hian added.
Both will be rewarded with a training stint under the tutelage of the Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) coaching crew.
This season, the organisers Ossia World of Golf also identified two budding cagers aged 15 years and below from each of the four legs held earlier.

Eight other emerging talents securing their places to join the training camp were Jacky Lim Chen Aik and Tan Zhi Hao (USJ Summit); Low Meng Lek and Lim Teng Sung (Danga Bay, Johor); Yong Fook Oon and Gan Teck Hwa (Bukit Tinggi, Klang); and Tan Rui Yong and Loo Lian Wei (Penang Times Square).
The company’s executive director, Saw Swee Leong, acknowledged that it was important to inject fresh excitement into the challenge after hosting the event for the seventh consecutive year.
“Previously, we named one player from each leg as the most promising player. It was depressing when only three of the five turned up for the four-day training with the national women’s team at the beginning of this year.
“We increased it to 10 players because it will be more fun for them to go through the paces as a team. We have not finalised the details of the training programme.
“But, they will definitely be embarking on a learning experience with Maba. For the challenge, we will be going back to the drawing board and review the concept of the event.
“We need a change to keep it interesting,” Swee Leong said.
After a long wait, the organisers delivered their promise as the local streetball followers savoured the rare opportunity to catch their idol Grayson “’The Professor” Boucher of the AND1 MixTape in action at the recent grand finale.

THE show homes were definitively an attraction for prospective buyers at the newly developed neighbourhood of Bandar Park-lands (Bandar Bukit Tinggi 3) in Klang.
But, the setting took an enlivening twist with renowned streetballer Grayson “The Professor’’ Boucher from the AND1 MixTape stable showing up at the People’s Park outdoor basketball court on Saturday.
Following an easier stint signing autographs and posing for photos with his fans at the Hoops Arena Indoor Basketball Court in Summit USJ a day earlier, the 26-year-old icon made his first appearance in displaying his exceptional skills to the spectators including the community around the area.

The hosts WCT Land also took the extra effort in ushering their visitors to the event with buntings lined up along the Kesas Highway leading up to the venue.
In showing his appreciation to the staunch backing in lining up the exclusive programme as part of his debut appearance in Malaysia, The Professor also handed over a half pair of his collectors’ shoe to the property developer’s sales and marketing manager Stewart Tew.
A total of 80 youngsters signed up for the open run and they were vying to earn the 10 slots for the exhibition match featuring The Professor.
The Professor considered three elements — effort, entertainment and skills — in picking the 10 deserving players.
The tiny figure, who stands at standing at only 1.78m, admitted it was a tough call to select the hopefuls for a rare opportunity to be in the friendly encounter.
“It was great seeing them showing so much interest. And it is always hard to turn them away when they tried their best to be in the line-up,” he added.
Three competent local men’s cagers from the recently concluded National Basketball League (NBL) were invited to join the occasion. The trio were Tan Kian Hoong, Ooi Ban Sin and Low Ee Kheng.
Previous winners of the In Search of Freestylists including Tan Soon Chern, Yap Tee Shen and Ismadi Hamidi were also in the fray.
And this season’s In Search of Freestylists finalist Tan Choon Sing was in his element as the 12-year-old earned a place in the Orange team against The Professor’s Blue Team.

THE wait is over for the local streetball followers to catch a top class act in Malaysia.
After arousing the desire of the basketball fans over the years, the organisers of the AND1 Streetball Challenge have finally fulfilled their promise and granted their supporters’ dream in the seventh edition of the outdoor three-on-three basketball campaign.
Although it might not be the complete cast of the high profile AND1 MixTape Tour, the stylish Grayson “The Professor” Boucher has confirmed that he will be visiting Malaysia from Aug 5 to 8.
In a recorded visual of the illustrious figure accepting the offer to make a solo special appearance, The Professor said he was excited to represent the basketball brand and present his fans here with a memorable experience.
“For the past two years, I have heard a lot about the big streetball event in Malaysia. It will be great to be part of it,” he added.

And this season’s final leg at the Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 8 will definitely end with a bang.
Besides having the rare opportunity to witness The Professor combining his exceptional ball-handling skills and clever moves, the streetball fans will also get a chance to take on the maestro. On the eve of the grand finals (Aug 7), the organisers are expecting on overwhelming turnout with the fans converging at the People’s Park in Bandar Parklands (Bandar Bukit Tinggi 3), Klang for the open run featuring The Professor.
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said they would be creating an identical MixTape court set up for the open run for about 300 participants to join in the occasion.
“We are offering players from the first 20 teams signing up in each of the challenge’s five legs with the special invitation to rub shoulders with The Professor. We have already identified the early birds from previous two legs,” added Swee Leong.
After Klang the challenge will head to the Penang Times Square on July 7.

WHETHER it is rapping, dancing or even performing tricks with a basketball in hand, freestyling is a definite attention grabber.
At one look, freestyling certainly looks easy as most of these moves are self composed and you need not have to be a good basketball player to excel in it.
However, getting the tricks right and having the patience for it might deter many from being part of this exciting sport said executive director of Ossia World of Golf Saw Swee Leong when met at the recent freestyling clinic at Hoops Arena in Summit USJ.

“After years of organising basketball competitions, we saw there is a potential in freestyling but the youngsters who are interested in it are afraid and shy to come forward to show off their skills.
“Maybe they feel that they only know a handful of tricks and it will embarrass them if they are not as good as the rest,” said Saw.

“With freestyling, these youngsters are able to not only show off their hidden talents but also express themselves with the moves and tricks they have created,” said Saw.
At the clinic, freestyling guru Mohd Ismail Mahidi taught participants several tricks together with last year’s winners Viktor Zeidler and Yap Tee Shen.
Many participants who were present, came with some basketball freestyling knowledge and were eager to share it with others.
For 16-year-old Suhaily Azmin, freestyling was not a new sport for him as he had previously participated in football freestyling but moved on to basketball recently as he wanted to try out something new.
“It’s easy for me because I don’t need to be good in football or basketball to do freestyling,” said the SMK Taman Desa student.

Another enthusiast Mohd Razin Safwan Roshdi, 18, who has been freestyling for over two years, said he made it a point to attend the clinics, so that he could brush up his skills with other freestylers and pick up some new tricks.
“Freestyling needs a lot of practice and sometimes it takes a few weeks just to learn a new act that I have seen on YouTube.
“Attending coaching clinics can help in perfecting some of the tricks and also make new friends,” said Mohd Razin, who is one of the 13 finalists shortlisted in the Freestyling Competition this year.
Besides hosting coaching clinics prior to the finals, Saw said participants as well as the public would also be able to catch Grayson Boucher or better known as “The Professor” from the team Streetball And1 Mixtape Tour.
The 26-year-old American basketball player will be in the country for the first time to share his experience on the game.
He will be meeting his fans at Hoops Arena, Summit USJ on Aug 6 (4pm), Bandar Parklands, Klang Aug 7 (5pm) and at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur on Aug 8 for the final leg of the AND1 3-on-3 Streetball Challenge where the finals of the Freestyling Competition would also be held.

THE blaring music certainly had the 600 streetballers all pumped up during the AND1 3-on-3 Streetball Challenge at the Penang Times Square in Penang on Sunday.
The shopping mall came alive with the dazzling streetballers’ basketball display and creative movements which saw many staring in disbelief at times during the one-day competition.
Cheers and claps by parents and friends standing by the sidelines also got the participants’ confidence growing from strength to strength as they tried to outdo each other for glory in five categories — Boys’ Under-13, Under-15, Under-18, Men’s Under-23 and Girls’ Under-18.

A drizzle towards the end of the competition resulted in the players adopting cautious approach in their moves.
Luckily, the rain did not last long when it came to the finals as players came to the court with renewed confidence, knowing they were just one win away from emerging triumphant.
One of the highlights was the Men’s Under-23 final which saw a keenly contested final between teams ‘A Zone Brother’ and ‘Washinoobka’ before the former prevailed at 7-6.
It also saw the battle of impressive players from both sides who strutted out delicate movement in the ding-dong battle that saw both teams neck-to-neck in points.

Team A Zone Brother’s talismanic player Kau Tong Fatt, 23, said it was worthwhile for them to travel all the way from the mainland to compete in the competition.
“We sacrificed our sleep on a Sunday morning but in the end it was worth it as we emerged as the champion. It feels great!
“But more importantly, we got to play with other teams and learn new things,” he said.
The event, which is into its seventh year, was organised by Ossia World of Golf, the distributors of AND1 brand in Malaysia.

Three players — Lee Chee Seng, 14, Ben Ooi, 16, and Loh Wei Hong, 16, — outshone six others in the Freestylist Competition.
They would come up against the nation’s top performers in the grand finals next month.
Two players — Tan Rui Yong, 13, and Loo Lian Wei, 15, — were selected as StarMetro’s Most Promising Players of the challenge.
The duo, who looked impressive throughout the competition, will get the chance to train with the national junior squad at the Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA).
State Youth, Sports, Women, Family and Community Development committee chairman Lydia Ong Kok Fooi also gave words of encouragement to the players before the start of the competition.
The five-leg challenge is sanctioned by MABA. Milo is the official beverage, StarMetro the official media, FlyFM and OneFM the official radio and Doublemint the official chewing gum.
The first three legs of this year’s challenge were held at Summit USJ, Selangor, Danga Bay, Johor, and Klang respectively prior to the fourth leg in Penang here.

THE heavy downpour did not dampen the spirit of the participants during the third leg of the AND1 Streetball Challenge at the AEON Jusco in Bukit Tinggi, Klang recently.
The participants, numbering about 500, lined up as early as 7am to register for the challenge, organised by Ossia World of Golf, the distributors of AND1 brand in Malaysia, with WCT Land providing the venue.

Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said they were surprised with the participants’ enthusiasm.
“We were quite worried when it rained. But the player were more interested in being part of the challenge. Luckily the rain stopped and the challenge proved to a hit among the participants. About 350 teams took part in the challenge with six categories- boys’ Under-13, boys’ Under-15, boys’ Under-18, boys’ Under-21, girls’ Under-15 and girls’ Under-18 — and there were teams from as far as Pahang and Malacca.
A parent John Low praised the organisers for initiating the challenge as it provided a platform for juniors to hone their skills.
“We hope to see more similar events being held. The youngsters will be able to be involved in healthy activities,’’ said John.

The next leg of the challenge will be in Penang on July 11 followed by the grand finals at the Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 8.

THE promotion drive to promote the third leg of the AND1 Streetball Challenge, to be held at the AEON Jusco in Bukit Tinggi, Klang on June 6, has started.
Ossia World of Golf, the organisers of the challenge, initiated a coaching clinic at the Kwang Hua Private School in Taman Eng Ann, Klang recently.

The atmosphere at the school’s indoor court was lively with the active movement of the boys and girls.
Following a briefing by the coaches, the students went through a warm-up session before getting into the real action.
This was followed by training and shooting drills which required each participant to shoot the ball into the net from far and close ranges.
They also took up with real match situation training sessions aimed at helping them to learn the art of attacking their opponents and defending when their opponents are on the offensive.
Kee Hian also gave them tips on the right way to catch the ball, the techniques of executing the ball and dribbling during the clinic.
While giving the thumbs-up, the coaches also advised the students on how to improve their skills.
The streetball challenge has six categories — boys’ Under-13, boys’ Under-15, boys’ Under-18, boys’ Under-21, girls’ Under-15 and girls’ Under-18 — and the organisers have limited participation to only 300 teams.
The challenge, organised by Ossia World of Golf, the distributors of AND1 brand in Malaysia, is sanctioned by the Malaysia Basketbal Association (MABA).
Milo is the official beverage, StarMetro the official media, FlyFM and OneFM the official radio, Doublemint the official chewing gum and WCT Land the venue sponsors.

JOHOR BARU: It was double joy for 14-year-old Low Meng Lek in the second leg of the AND1 Streetball challenge because not only did his team emerge as the champion but he got selected as the most promising player in the challenge.
His three-men team, GP I Love You, won the boys’ Under 14 challenge while Low was voted StarMetro’s Most Promising Player in the challenge at Danga Bay recently.
Low from SMK Gelang Patah thanked his team-mates for their support in helping him clinch the award.

He was quite surprised to have beenvoted as the most promising player in the challenge.
“I was surprised to have been selected as there were other players who were much bigger and better than me,” he said.
Low, who idolises Los Angeles Lakers star player Kobe Bryant said he started playing basket-ball when he first watched Bryant on television some four years ago.
In being voted as the StarMetro Most Promising Player in the challenge, Low will be able to train at the Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) academy.
He added that he could not wait to be trained under the watchful eyes of professional coaches at MABA.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and to be train at MABA is a dream come true for me,” he said.

A total of 200 teams took part in the event.
In the boys’ Under-14 category, GP I Love You emerged champions while Skudai U16 were champions in the boys’ Under-16 age group.
Skudai B were champions in the boys’ Under-18 age group while the Flat Belly emerged champions in the girls’ Under-18 age group.
Tay Yu Heng emerged as the winner in the Freestylist competition where he was among the three finalists.
The other two were Tan Qi Han and Teng Seng Fu.
The AND1 Streetball Challenge is sanctioned by Maba with Milo as the official beverage, StarMetro as official media, FlyFM and OneFM as official radio, Doublemint as the official chewing gum and Danga Bay as venue sponsors.

JOHOR BARU: Student Shao Xian was among the participants at the coaching clinic held at the Foon Yew High School recently.
The coaching clinic was organised by Ossia World of Golf as part of the promotional activities for the second leg of the AND1 3 on 3 Streetball Challenge at Danga Bay, Johor Baru on May 16.
Professional basketball coaches - the Philippines’ Paul Daniel Advincula, Malaysian Tan Kee Hian and Nigerian Ahmad Tenitope - were present to share their experience with the participants.

Advincula, the head coach of Malaysia Basketball Academy in Klang, explained to the participants on the importance of mastering the basic skills - dribbling, shooting and passing - involved in basketball. The participants were also given the chance to go one on one against the towering Tenitope, who is 2.03m tall.
The 16-year-old Shao Xian said he had fun at the clinic.
“The coach gave us an insight on the training methods which will be useful. The training was much more better than the training that I had in school,” he said.
Shao Xian, who had taken part in the AND1 Streetball Challenge in Johor Baru last year, said he would give his best for this year’s challenge.
“I can finally dribble the ball better based on the tips given by the coaches. I feel I can become a good basketball player by participating in the clinic,” he said.

Advincula said he was impressed with participants’ skills and stressed that training was very important to players especially when they are young, in order for them to become good basketball players.
Kee Hian, a former national player, said the talent and the size of basketball players were perfect as they were tall and bigger for their age.
“The clinic at SMK Permas Jaya 3 was the third basketball clinic that we had and the response that we received is very encouraging.
The second leg of the challenge offered four categories - boys’ Under-14, boys’ Under-16, boys’ Under-18 and girls’ Under-18- and the organisers are expecting a maximum 200 teams.

JOHOR BARU: Danga Bay here will be the venue for the second leg of AND1 3-on-3 streetball challenge on May 16.
Last year, the challenge was held at the Zon in Johor Baru as the Danga Bay was under renovations.
The organisers — Ossia World of Golf — have decided to stage the event at Danga Bay this time around.
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said the new venue was ideally located and appropriate for the challenge.

“We are limiting participation to 200 teams at the maximum. Due to logistical reasons, we cannot accept more. So we urge teams to register early to avoid disappointment,” he said.
The challenge will have four categories — three for boys and one for girls. The three age groups for boys are Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 while the only age group for girls is Under-18.
Ossia World of Golf will also initiate a series of coaching clinics to promote the challenge.
“Our aim is to get more youngsters active and participate in the challenge.
“Past coaching clinics had played a big part in encouraging youngsters to join the AND1 3-on-3 streetball challenge. As the clinics will be held in schools and public courts, we will be able to reach out to our targeted group,” said Swee Leong.
The challenge, held for the seventh year, is sanctioned by the Malaysian Basketball Association (Maba). Milo is the official beverage, StarMetro the official media, One FM and FlyFM are the official radio stations while Doublemint is the official chewing gum.

THE youngsters came out in full force to make the opening leg of the AND1 3-on-3 streetball challenge at the Summit USJ a big success.
Ossia World of Golf, the organisers of the challenge, had set a target of 350 teams but about 370 teams had flocked to the venue as early as 7.30am.
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said they were surprised at the overwhelming response for the challenge.
Stepping up: Oveke was also on hand to entertain the participants.
“The active participation of the youngsters proves that the challenge is a popular event in the Klang Valley. What makes the event more interesting is the presence of parents giving support to their children.
“With support from sponsors, we are convinced that the challenge has grown over the last few years,” Saw said. Many of the participants, despite losing in the preliminary rounds, stayed back to take part in the other events like free throw, in search of freestylist and shooting competitions. The events offered attractive AND1 merchandise as prizes.
Paul Daniel Advincula, who heads a basketball academy in Klang, came with a busload of young players. “Participation in the challenge was to expose the youngsters to the competitive atmosphere. The players had a good time and enjoyed watching the exciting matches,” Advincula said.
Former international Tan Kee Hian said the matches were exciting and the spectators enjoyed the games.
The most exciting match of the challenge was between YN1 and Survival 1. The match was keenly contested but, in the end, YN1 managed to beat Survival 1 6-2.
Former Nigerian junior cager Mike Oveke also showed up to add excitement to the occasion with a series of slam dunk manoeuvres.

IT is not only a basketball event but the AND1 3 on 3 Streetball Challenge at the USJ Summit on Sunday is also an opportunity for the participants to have a good time.
Besides taking part in the exciting streetball challenge, participants will be able to take part in the free throw, in search of freetsylist and shooting competitions. The events offer attractive prizes to the winners. There will also be a lucky draw offering AND1 merchandise.
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said about 1,150 youngsters were expected to gather at the venue on Sunday.
“There will be a carnival atmosphere. As most of the participants are preparing for their school and district basketball competitions, we anticipate some exciting matches,’’ said Saw.

The first leg caters for boys’ Under-13, Under-15, Under-18 and Under-21, and girls’ Under-15 as well as Under-18.
Another incentive for the participants is the StarMetro Promising Player award. Last year, the organisers had picked one player from each leg. The winners had the chance to attend a three-day training stint with the National junior women’s squad.
This year, Saw said they would be picking more winners and form a team for the training stint.

Cagers relish chance to play with national juniors in camp

IT was an eye-opening experience for the three winners of the StarMetro Most Promising Player award when they attended a three-day training camp in Kuala Lumpur recently.
The trio of Brenn Do Kho, Sim Zi Xuan and R. Premsandiran had the chance to train under national women’s coach Yoong Sze Yuin.
All three had participated in the AND1 3 on 3 streetball challenge, organised by the Ossia World of Golf, last year.
The Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA), who has sanctioned the challenge, had promised to give the award winners in each leg the opportunity to join the national training camp.
Brenn, a Form Three student of SMK Bukit Unjul, Klang said he enjoyed the training sessions and the coach was very helpful.
“The training was good and I learnt a lot of new techniques involved in basketball. What I have learnt here will come in handy when I represent my school in the age group competitions,’’ said Brenn.
Sim, a student of the SMK Chong Hwa, Greenlane, Penang, could not hide his excitement and showed a lot enthusiasm when training with the national juniors.
“I have learnt some new techniques. Now I will be able to use the skills when playing in competitions.’’ said Sim.
Premsandiran, a Form Three student of SMK Taman Melawati, Kuala Lumpur said the stint was timely and he wanted to give his best in the coming competitions.
“I will be playing in the Selangor Schools Sports Council (MSSS) championship. After the training stint I will be able to play an important role for my district,’’ said Premsandiran.
Coach Yoong was impressed with the trio’s commitment during the stint.
“They showed a lot of enthusiasm and were prepared to learn. They matched the national trainees,’’ said Yoong.
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said they were committed towards the development of basketball at grassroots level.
“We are encouraged with the feedback from the participants. With support from the sponsors, we are keen to continue with the awards once again for the new season starting on April 11,’’ said Saw.

The first leg will be in Subang USJ Summit followed by Danga Bay, Johor (May 9); Jusco, Bukit Tinggi, Klang (June 6); Esplanade, Penang (July 11) and the grand finals at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur on Aug 8.
The organisers will also initiate a series of coaching clinics as part of the promotional activities for the challenge.

THE Malaysian Basketball Association (MABA) has endorsed the four-leg AND1 3 on 3 Streetball Challenge starting at Summit USJ , Subang on April 11.
MABA secretary-general Tan See Wah said the streetball challenge was a platform for youngsters to be active in basketball.
Meanwhile, Milo had come forward for the sixth consecutive season to support the circuit culminating with the grand finals at the Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 8.
Nestle Products sports marketing manager Ng Ping Loong said the challenge was in line with their vision - Play More Learn More - and master the basics involved in basketball.

FOREIGN students from Africa provided a pulsating finish in the opening final at the sixth edition of the AND1 Streetball Challenge at Berjaya Times Square on Sunday.
Although it was a slow start in the match that saw MTV and LA Heat battling for supremacy in the open non-Chinese section, it went down to the wire before MTV prevailed in the sudden-death free throw shootout.
LA Heat took more than three minutes in the six-minute encounter to break the deadlock and went ahead through Edet Ebime.

Ebine also slotted all the three points for the 3-3 draw after the regulatory period.
However, Victor Nwosu was the toast of the MTV side contributing all five points for the 5-4 win in the closely contested match. Even the first round of free throws saw all three players from each side taking the shots failed to produce the winners as the score was tied at 1-1.
And Nwosu stepped up to the challenge when the heat was on and earned the crucial point. The 19-year-old Nigerian rose to the occasion to chalk up the winning point in his first attempt during the sudden death decider.
MTV captain Michael D. Mtali admitted that it was a tough physical match with both teams engaging in robust confrontation to stamp their mark.
“It was a hard match and both teams were very cautious at the early stages of the match. We applied tight marking in our defensive strategy.

“But, we were confident of delivering as we had a solid team gelling well together throughout the challenge,” the 27-year-old from Tanzania said.
Meanwhile, former Nigerian junior cager Micheal Ogheneme thrilled the spectators with a series of slam dunk manoeuvres as the curtain raiser to the Milo In Search of Freestylists competition with 10 of the 12 qualifiers from the four legs held earlier turning up to vie for the top three positions.
The trio of Tan Soon Chern, Yap Tee Shen and Victor Zeidler Lim were the best three performers and secured the RM3,000 worth of AND1 products sponsorship each.
Tan, an 18-year-old pre-university student, said he had to juggle his training to prepare for the competition in between his studies.
“I am not very sharp today. As a result, I committed several errors in both the introduction round and the one-on-one challenge. I have been taking part in the freestyle competition over the past three seasons and I am delighted that I went all the way to accomplish a decent finish this year,” he added.

It was also a nostalgic moment for the four previous winners in the freestyle competition as they walked down memory lane recalling fond memories of previous challenges.
The quartet were Nabil Ra’uf Harun, Mohd Ismadi Hamidi, Choong Wai Kit and Lam Wei Ken.
In addition, the spectators were treated to high quality In Search of Talent competitions comprising the MC and Beatbox competitions hosted by Vibe Tha Rapper.
For the head-on battle in the MC section, Nigerian Iliya Ibrahim edged local hopeful Ahmad Zaki Nawawi and walked away with the iPod shuffle 4G.
Despite not having the best preparation for the duel, the 21-year-old Iliya said he was in very relaxed mood to score a 2-1 win against a younger 17-year-old challenger.
“It was fun joining the event. It was a chance to display flair for music at a basketball competition. I had an excellent opening round. I was all pumped up when the crowd responded positively.
“I was surprised when they understood the lyrics and threw their support behind me,” he said.

In the beatbox competition, national champion Shawn Lee took the top position ahead of Liow Yin Chen and Koit Ken Jee in second and third respectively.
The pint-sized Lee, who finished ninth at the world championship at Berlin in Germany in May, produced an impressive and powerful club-styled tempo.
The 18-year-old School of Audio Engineering student admitted that it was a competitive field with other worthy contenders in the fray.
“I have also been performing quite regularly. And it was a chance to gauge my strength against my peers,” Lee added.
Lee took home the iPod shuffle 4G while Liow settled for an iPod shuffle 2G. Koit received the Sony MP3 player.
The Star managing editor David Yeoh gave away the prizes to the winners in both of the side events hosted in conjunction with the challenge.
Milo sports marketing manager Ng Ping Loong was also present to witness the competitors in action.
More than 350 sides featured in six categories — boys’ Under-14, boys’ Under-16, boys’ Under-18, men’s Under-23, girls’ Under-18 and open (non-Chinese) — as the came down for the highly rated three-on-three basketball meet.

THE Esplanade seafront in George Town formed an impressive backdrop for some 650 streetballers who slogged it out under the scorching sun during the fourth leg of the AND1 3-on-3 Streetball Challenge on Sunday.
The blaring beat of funky music further pumped the adrenaline of each participant who dazzled the crowd with their excellent skills during the one-day event.
Even before the start of the competition, the crowd was already cheering as five top freestylists in the country displayed superb basketball handling skills with a fresh style of choreography and fancy moves.
They took on five participants for an exhibition match during the carnival-like event. Parents and friends also turned up to show support for the streetballers who wowed the crowd throughout the day.

“We targeted only 200 teams. Last year, 163 teams took part in the competition,” he said.
Saw said the seafront also provided a magnificent backdrop to the site. Top basketball freestylist Mike Ovoke executing a slam dunk before the state of the 'in serach of freestyle competition'.
“The view of the sea was breathtaking and offered a different feel to the players. The competition was previously held in Komtar for three years,” he said.
The streetball challenge, which was held for the fourth consecutive year in Penang, was open to teams of three in five categories – Boys’ Under-13, Boys’ Under-15, Boys’ Under-18, Men’s Under-23 and Girls’ Under-18.
Among the highlights was the Men’s Under-23 final. It was nerve-racking to watch the match between Washi(Noob)Ka and Kosova which the former won 7-5.
Washi(Noob)Ka initially started as the losing side but the team picked up steam in the final minute.
TSY and 3K finished third and fourth respectively in the category.
The Girls’ Under-18 final match left onlookers squeezing their fingers in anxiety as 123 edged out Scorpion 3-2 in the tight match.
SLX and Explorer finished third and fourth in the category.
The Boys’ Under-18 final match was one-sided as Baby Team outplayed Simple 1 with a score of 9-4.

ENE Sports Marketing came out third with Baby Team 1 in the fourth place.
Prizes were awarded up to fourth placing for each category. First-place winners walked away with AND1 basketball shoes worth RM399, second-place winners AND1 shoes worth RM289 and third-place winners AND1 shoes worth RM239.
The top three winners also received other sponsor goodies while the fourth place winners walked away with AND1 products.
Another focus of the event was the search for the StarMetro Most Promising Player.
Sim Zi Xuan, 13, from SMJK Chung Hwa Confucion said he did not expect to win the title.
The Form One student, whose team CJ7 also won first place in the Under-13 category, said he only started playing basketball two years ago after watching his friends on the court.
“I can play table tennis better. I only took part in the competition with friends to have some fun.A player reaching out for the ball as his opponent team moves into attack.
“From now on, I will focus more on basketball as the title has given me a confidence boost,” he said.
Sim will have the opportunity to join a training stint at the Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) academy.
Several events on the sidelines also kept the crowd occupied throughout the challenge, among them were the in search of free-stylist competition, in search of EMCEE competition, Beat Box competition, free throw competition and shooting competition.
In the Beat Box competition, participants were required to produce beats through the microphone using only their voices, with no accompanying music.
State Youth, Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Lydia Ong Kok Fooi also turned up show her support for the event. CHAMPS: The champion teams from all categories showing off their prizes.
The Milo booth also saw a flurry of activities with participants taking turn to try out the motion-sensing Nintendo Wii video games.
There was also a lucky draw offering AND1 Limited Edition NBA & Mixtape Signature shoes.
Prior to the competition, each team received an AND1 basketball along with a free AND1 jersey for each player. SPECTATORS of the AND1 Streetball Challenge’s fourth leg at the Esplanade on Aug 9 will have more than scintillating hoop-shooting to look forward to as the event will also feature many interesting side events, among them the ‘In Search of Freestylist’ competition.
Freestyling is a creative and artistic form of basketball, where players show off their talents and stunts, and requires excellent ball-handling skills.
Among the few early birds who turned up to register for the competition at the Han Chiang High School over the weekend were close pals Tan Soon Chern and Tan Jue Hang, who both picked up freestyling on their own through Internet sites like Youtube.
“Although I do play normal basketball, it can be quite boring at times so I started freestyling, which is more flexible in terms of steps. It has since become my passion over the past four years,” Soon Chern said.
“At first I thought it was cool, so I started training myself at home,” Jue Hang added.
Soon Chern and Jue Hang were joined by Choong Wai Kit (2005 winner) and Lam Wei Ken (2008 winner) in displaying their unique skills in a special 10-minute cameo during the half time interval of the National Basketball League 2009 game between Segamat Basketball Association and Bintulu Rainbow, held at the school’s indoor stadium.
Due to work commitments, Choong won’t be joining this year’s freestylist search, while Lam will be among the judging panel. But they both had three solid words of advice: practice makes perfect.
Competition organiser Ossia World of Golf divisional manager Ong Sai Ping said that freestyling is rapidly gaining popularity mainly due to its creative and showmanship elements, and as a result, is an ever-present side event for the AND1 Streetball Challenge.
Held for the sixth consecutive year, the streetball challenge is open to teams of three in five categories - Boys’ Under-13 (born in or after 1996), Under-15 (born in or after 1994) and Under-18, Girls’ Under-18 (born in or after 1991) and Men’s Under-23 (born in or after 1986).
The registration fee for each team is RM90. Entry forms must be submitted by Aug 6 and is limited to the first 200 teams on a first-come, first-served basis.
Each team will receive an AND1 basketball on the event day along with a free AND1 jersey for each player. AND1 basketball shoes and other goodies will also be given away to the winners of each category.
There will also be a lucky draw where the winner will walk away with a AND1 Limited Edition NBA & MIXTAPE Signature shoe.
The Penang leg, to be played out in front of in front of the historic City Hall and Town Hall buildings in George Town, follows earlier legs held in Subang, Johor Baru and Klang. The final leg will be held at the Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 4.

FOREIGN students pursuing their tertiary education in Malaysia turned up to add excitement to the third leg of the AND1 Streetball Challenge at AEON Bandar Bukit Tinggi in Klang on Sunday.
The HELP University College trio of Micheal Ogheneme, Temitope Ahmed and Belmar Mabhena teamed up with Meka Samuel from Nigeria to feature in the open run at the tournament’s centre court.
Besides the foreigners, the three previous winners of the In Search of the Freestylists — Nabil Ra’uf Harun, Anirudh Aravind and Mohd Ismadi Hamidi - also joined the occasion on the bigger playing area set up with gravity-defying slam dunk stand at each end.
The 22-year-old Mabhena from Zimbabwe, who has been residing here for more than a year, said it was a great experience to be part of an established three-on-three outdoor basketball event.
“We have been playing together for our college team. It was fun entertaining the youngsters and inspire them to emulate our moves,” he added.

Local rapper Dareyno from Rough Sound Entertainment also thrilled the spectators with his entertaining tunes and antics for the event that drew a full house turnout of 300 teams in six categories - boys’ Under-13, boys’ Under-15, boys’ Under-18, boys’ Under-21, girls’ Under-15 and girls’ Under-18.
The organisers also gave away several prizes to the lucky draw winners before the proper tournament commenced.
And team TC in the boys’ Under-15 contest were the biggest winners as they took home the half pair of shoe signed by AND1 MixTape icon Jerry Dupree, who is fondly referred to as the Assassin.
The visitors also took the opportunity to pick up a bargain purchasing the previous editions of the challenge’s jerseys priced between RM10 and RM30 each.
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said they would be conducting sales for the remaining two legs scheduled at Esplanade, Penang (Aug 9) and Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur (Oct 25).
“We will be channelling part of the proceeds from the initiative to a deserving charity organisation,” he added.
The Milo booth geared up with the Nintendo Wii video games requiring the participants to simulate actual physical actions was also a hit with the visitors.
Meanwhile, last year’s grand final qualifier Yap Tee Shen provided a minor sparkle with a brief flash of ball handling brilliance in the Milo In Search of Freestylists contest.
It was the 17-year-old SMK Dato Hamzah, Klang student’s second attempt to have another crack at the grand final in Berjaya Times Square. Uplifting experience: Temitope Ahmed from Nigeria hoisting 10-yearold Yap Chun Ann to execute a slam dunk.
“Today, I am delighted that I managed to pull off the slow motion moves. I will be perfecting my skills to deliver a more polished routine for the upcoming competition,” said Yap.
Even the event’s long-serving deejay, DJ Shai (N. Saravanan) also could not resist giving seasoned campaigner Hassan Marialis a hard time and reiterated the 20-year-old contender’s persistence in trying to have a crack to be among the top three winners at the grand final.
However, SMJK Kwang Hua student Koh Zheng Zhe said he was surprised to pick up the final slot for a showdown at the season’s grand finale.
The 14-year-old admitted he had a tough encounter against Hassan in the one-on-one duel.
“I found it hard to deceive him because he shut me down with his better reach,” said Koh, adding that he has been keen following freestyle since he was in Year Six because of the freedom to express himself on the court.
A total of 12 competitors from the first four legs will be vying to finish as the top three freestylists of the season and are in the running for with AND1 equipment sponsorship worth RM3,000 each.

Five-a-side open run the highlight of third leg in Klang

THERE will be plenty of chances for the young participants to shine at the third leg of the AND1 Streetball Challenge at AEON Bandar Bukit Tinggi in Klang tomorrow.
This time, the organisers are creating another platform to give them a push to discover their hidden potential and move up to another level.

Four notable names, along with an invited player, will be representing the AND1 side and they will be fending off the challenge from potential contenders in the five-a-side open run at the main arena.

Lanky former Nigerian junior cager Micheal Ogheneme, who stands at 1.98m, will be joining three previous In Search of Freestylists winners – Nabil Ra’uf Harun, Anirudh Aravind and Mohd Ismadi Hamidi – to stand up against their potential opponents.
The other member in the team is the unknown foreign student Tope Ahmed.
In the 15-minute sneak preview before the matches in the actual tournament commence in the morning, they will be thrilling the participants and spectators by combining slick freestyle moves in their bid to sink the baskets.
And, local rapper Dareyno from Rough Sound Entertainment, who is the mediator in the In Search of Talent event comprising MC and beatbox competitions, will be flaunting his flair for the genre in delivering the running commentary and stirring up interest for the brief entertaining encounter. Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said they would be gauging the response and intensity of the open run to inject additional excitement.
“We have lined up another two sessions for the open run in the afternoon. It will be an opportunity for the young participants to test their skills against the stiffer and more competent players in the AND1 line-up,” he added.
Other side events, including the Milo In Search of Freestylists and In Search of Talent, will also be hosted on the centre court.
A total of 300 teams are expected to be in the fray in the six categories – boys’ Under-13, boys’ Under-15, boys’ Under-18, boys’ Under-21, girls’ Under-15 and girls’ Under-18.

Former international Tan Kee Hian offers to line up additional coaching sessions By NG WEI LOON
THE attentive and eager learners at the Kwang Hua Private High School in Klang caught the attention of the AND1 Streetball Challenge coaching crew and made a lasting first impression.
In a bid to drum up support for the third leg of the three-on-three basketball meet scheduled to take place at AEON Bandar Bukit Tinggi in Klang on June 28, former international Tan Kee Hian and national men’s cager Wee Chuan Chin conducted a two-hour session for about 30 trainees at the school’s newly built covered court on Friday.
Based on the youngsters’ positive attitude and outstanding commitment during the coaching programme, Tan has offered to line up additional coaching sessions for the budding cagers at the school in the future.
“To be honest, we have not seen such well-behaved children for a long time. It was certainly a joy to guide them. Over to you: Soon (right) presenting the contribution to Teung.
“We knew that they had a burning desire to learn. They did not only follow our instructions to perform the exercises; they were also inquisitive and did not hesitate to ask us questions related to the game,” he added.
As an indication of their seriousness in going through the paces, the participants even performed warm-up and stretching exercises in a group before the two trainers started the ball rolling with the proper ball-handling skills comprising positioning, dribbling, shooting and passing.
Ng Shu Yhang, a player in the boys’ Under-18 side, said he wanted to learn the finer points so that he could be more consistent in scoring points.
“We were fortunate that the trainers shared their knowledge with us and helped us in acquiring the correct technique to shoot well,” added the 17-year-old, who has been taking part in the streetball challenge since he was in Form One.
The school’s basketball teacher, Teung Pee Hoi, however, admitted that her charges had not achieved anything exceptional in tournaments thus far.
“We are strengthening our school teams. Currently, we have three teams (boys’ Under-15, boys’ Under-18 and girls’ Under-16).
“Most of the beginners have been showing good progress with regular training twice a week. It was a good exposure for them to pick up the right techniques from the experts,” she added.

The girls displayed their courage in taking on the boys, but went down fighting.
The boys were rewarded with a ball each for their feat while the girls went home with a wristband each.
Sixteen-year-old Eng Yuan Ying said they knew that they did not stand a chance at upstaging the boys.
“They were definitely more accurate than we were. But, we wanted to put up a brave fight and have fun competing against them,” she added.
WCT Land Sdn Bhd sales and marketing executive Adrian Soon also handed over six balls to the school as part of their community programme to inspire the students to scale greater heights in basketball.

AUSTRALIAN basketball professional Benjamin Knight was enthusiastic about sharing his experience with a group of youngsters at a coaching clinic at Butterfly Park in Klang.
The towering Knight, who had played professional basketball in Italy and Singapore, showed the participants several tricks involved in the game.
The participants, mostly teenagers, were game for the challenge by the 2.03m tall Knight. They were put through a series of drills as well as tactics. Listen up, boys: Knight (right) sharing his experience with players at the coaching clinic.
Knight said he was impressed with the participants.
“I am happy to be here tonight. Being a basketball player, I am keen to see more youngsters actively involved in the game. The youngsters showed their commitment in training. There should be more similar clinics for the players to improve their skills,’’ he said.
Knight and international Ooi Ban Sin spent almost two hours with the youngsters.
The coaching clinic was part of the promotional efforts for the third leg of the AND1 Streetball Challenge to be held at the AEON Bukit Tinggi, Klang on June 28.

Nigerian touch to streetball challenge

FORMER Nigerian junior cager Micheal Ogheneme will be joining the top local freestylists to drum up support for the remaining three legs of AND1 Streetball Challenge three-on-three basketball event.
The 25-year-old, who featured as a point guard for his national side at the World Junior Under-21 meet in Argentina in 2005, is on basketball scholarship to pursue his undergraduate studies in business at HELP University College.
“I am also playing and coaching the university team. I expect to finish my studies in three years and hope to continue with the Masters degree,” said Ogheneme, who also emerged as the top 15 promising players in the African continent for the Basketball Without Borders campaign hosted by North America’s National Basketball Association (NBA) in 2004.
The lanky figure, who stands at 1.98m, was also part of the victorious Islanders Basketball Club lifting the Nigerian national league title for four consecutive years (2003-2006) and had the privilege to captain the side in 2005 and 2006.
After going through a dry spell without high level competition since residing here in September, Oghe-neme is itching to get back into top flight action.

“I have been playing basketball for a long time. I also started with streetball when I was growing up at the age of 16. It is nice that streetball also has a strong following here,” he said.
The four other former In Search of Freestylists winners from the previous three editions in team are Nabil Ra’uf Harun, Anirudh Aravind, Mohd Ismadi Hamidi and Lam Wei Ken.
Recently, Ogheneme joined the trio of Nabil, Anirudh and Ismadi to share their thoughts on the progress of the Milo In Search of Freestylists with Milo sports marketing manager Ng Ping Loong.
Ng acknowledged that the youngsters brought up constructive suggestions to inject more excitement into the freestyle contest.
“They are role models inspiring the budding competitors to keep on striving for improvement. They have great ideas to raise the bar and increase the degree of difficulty. But, they have not forgotten about the fun element to encourage others to take up the challenge,” he added.

Teen bags Most Promising Player award

GAN KHIM TENG had mixed fortunes in the second leg of the AND1 Streetball Challenge at The Zon in Johor Baru recently.She was voted as the StarMetro Most Promising Player in the Challenge. However her team- Bukit Gambir - did not fare well in the girls’ Under-18 category of the challenge. The 13-year-old Gan, third in a family of seven, was easily the most outstanding player in the competition. She was in the thick of action and scored all her team’s seven points in the challenge.

Gan was shocked when her name was announced as the winner of the award.
“I just played my best and tried my hardest,” said Gan, who will get the privilege to train at the Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) academy.
However Gan said she would have to seek her parents’ permission before accepting the offer to train at the academy.
“I started playing basketball as a form of exercise but I grew to love the game since two years ago. Taking part in the AND1 Streetball Challenge was a chance I simply could not miss,” she said. You can’t touch this: Participants showing his skills during the freestylists competition.
Former international Tan Kee Hian, who was a member of the organising team, said Gan was chosen because she had the skills. “She has a natural skill and has a lot of potential,” he said.

Sky Two, with the Song twins - Guan Lin and Chie Lin, were the champions in the boys’ Under-16 age group. The other member of the team was Wong Yok Zhi.
In the boys’ Under-18 category, Bukit Gambir 2 emerged champions. Miracle B were champions in the boys’ Under-14 age group.
Lau Chin Hui emerged as the winner in the Freestylist competition. He was among the three finalists. The other two were Tan Qi Han and Teng Seng Fu.
The next leg of the challenge will be held at the AEON Jaya Jusco in Klang on June 28.

Local councils have been urged to build basketball courts for the Under-12 age group.
Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah made the call at the first leg of the AND1 Streetball Challenge at the Summit USJ recently.
“Basketball is an interesting sport. I am very happy to be among the youngsters, who have gathered for the Challenge. Unfortunately, there is only one court for the Under-12 age group in the country. Unless and until we have basketball courts for this age group, it will not be possible for Malaysians to excel in the game.
“So we request local councils to build one basketball court, catering for the Under-12 age group, in each district. Then we will have a bigger group of young boys and girls active in the game. I was also informed that 369 teams had signed up for the event. It is a good day for basketball,’’ said Saifuddin.
He also commended the organisers — Ossia World of Golf — for initiating the Challenge, which brought together youngsters for a an exciting time.

The Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) secretary Tan See Wah, Milo sports marketing manager Ng Ping Loong and Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong were also present at the opening ceremony.
Saifuddin took the opportunity to get more information on the age group competitions organised by MABA.
Tan, who is also the chief coach of the national women’s squad, informed Saifuddin that they have three age groups — Under-12, Under-16 and Under-18 — for both boys and girls.
Saifuddin said MABA should also look at the Under-14 age group for a more comprehensive training and development programme.
“There is also an avenue for a competition for those in college and higher learning institutions. We are working with MABA in organising a University College Basketball League,’’ said Saifuddin.

TELEPHATIC understanding and good height to boot earned “You Like Lah’’ the Under-21 champion’s crown in the first-leg of the AND1 3x3 Streetball Challenge held at the USJ Summit in Subang Jaya.
Both the teams played a very tight game to ensure they made less mistakes but in the end the champions went on to win 11-6 in the final against team “Rex”.
And the champion’s crown was sweet victory as they had to come to the final stage by defeating 21 teams in the preliminary rounds.
In the semi-finals, “You Like Lah” beat ACE Education 10-5 while Rex outplayed SST Team 4-2

In the Under-13 boys’ competition, “DNA White Boys” emerged champion when they trashed “The Earth” 5-2. In the semi-finals they beat “Lie Learn” while “The Earth” put aside “KNS Pro” by a solitary point.
Although The “DNA White Boys” were more superior in their movements and tactics, the losers were, however, able to keep the score low and were lucky not to lose by a bigger margin.
In the girls’ competition, Tunku Kurshiah College (TKC) Seremban was well represented with eight teams in both the Under-15 and Under-18 categories.
Although it was the first time the TKC was taking part in competitive basketball, it was a fruitful outing for them as one team - TKC 5 made it to the quarter-finals stage of the Under-15 category.
The TKC outfits were only put together after a recent AND1 coaching clinic held at their venue in Sikamat, Seremban.
The boys’ Under-15 category attracted the most number of teams at 138 followed by the Under-21 boys category with 106 teams.
In other final matches - The Scorpion beat Lucky EME A (4-3) in the Under-15 girls’ category, Lucky 7 put aside Benana (7-6) in the Under-18 category, Survival 1 beat Transcendent Escapee (1-0) in the Under-15 boys’ category while Prosport brushed aside Kenneth Sure Win Again (3-2) in the Under-18 boys’ competition. A total of 369 teams vied for honours in six categories - Boys’ Under-13, Boys’ Under-15, Boys’ Under-18, Boys’ Under21, Girls’ Under-15 and Girls’ Under-18.
In this year’s competition the organisers have added the “StarMetro Most Promising Player” award which went to Brenn Do Kho, a Under-15 player.

PROSPORTS, a basketball club based in Kepong Baru, is grateful to AND1 for initiating a coaching clinic for their trainees.
AND1 coaching crew comprising national women’s assistant coach Yoong Sze Yuin and internationals Thoh Chai Ling and Choo Shwok Ping spent almost two hours at Prosports’ centre of excellence.
Prosports coach Chow Chee Woo said the coaching sessions were interesting and their trainees had a good time.
“We have about 50 juniors in our training programme. Most of whom are also active in streetball. Both the internationals shared good rapport with the trainees. They interacted with the participants.

“It is not often that our trainees get the opportunity to meet the national players,’’ Chow said.
Thoh, who has been with the national squad for almost six years, said she was happy to share her skills with the young trainees.
The jovial Thoh, to the surprise of the trainees, displayed excellent skills in streetball.
The 26-year old said it was the third coaching clinic.
“We have been getting good response and we hope to see the young players improve their skills,’’ said Thoh.
The coaching clinic was organised by Ossia World of Golf, the distributors of AND1 brand in Malaysia, in conjunction with the AND1 Streetball Challenge. The first leg of the Challenge will be at the Summit USJ on April 26.
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said they were on target of getting 350 teams for the first leg.
“We are going to public courts to conduct the clinics. Despite the late evening rainy season, we have been getting encouraging response from the children. We are optimistic of a good turn out for the first leg,’’ said Saw.

TKC girls enjoy gruelling sessions with national cagers

THE enthusiasm shown by the 30 students of the Tunku Kurshiah Girl’s College (TKC) in Seremban during the AND1 basketball clinic revealed one positive sign - that the sport is well received by the fairer sex.
Even national women team’s head coach Tan See Wah and his assistant Yong Sye Yuin were full of praise for the students who adapted to the game after just two hours of warm-up session.
The students from Form One to Form Five, had volunteered for the basketball clinic, initiated by Ossia World of Golf, the distributors of AND1 brand in Malaysia.

Though several of them were first timers, they were quick to grasp the intricacies of the sport.
Tan and Yong, who had the services of 2007 SEA Games gold medallist Thoh Chai Ling; national players Choo Sook Pin and Nur Izzati and Elite Squad member R. Kalaimathi, put the students through a three-hour warm-up session and drills before conducting a two hour intensive training at the college.
The participants were taught the basic skills of basketball including ball handling, dribbling, passing, shooting, fitness and footwork.
Tan, who is also MABA secretary-general, had a good collection of medals and accolades while assistant coach Yong was in Leipzig, Germany, for six years under a training programme, so the girls were under professional guidance and learnt only the best.
Despite the sweltering heat, the girls showed no sign of slowing down and the way they moved on the court showed they were enjoying every minute of it and did not want to stop.
“I am amazed with their commitment although for some of them, it is the first time that they had ever held a basketball.
“They can be good if they work hard and follow the techniques of the game strictly,’’ said Tan.
Fifth Former Ameenah Azman, 17, said she enjoyed the game thoroughly and had been playing the game since she started schooling in TKC while colleague Nathrah Zawawi, 14, said she first took to basketball last year.
“We have learnt why it is important to follow a strict regiment which can also be applied in our daily school life,’’ said the girls.
Like Ameenah and Natrah, all the other girls are hoping to participate in the first leg of the AND1 Streetball Challenge at the Summit USJ Subang on April 26.
“I think we have done quite well at the basketball clinic. We learnt a couple of new tricks and with a bit more training, we should be ready for the challenge,’’ said Ameenah, who is also TKC headgirl.
If the girls put up a good showing at the streetball challenge, they should thank the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development deputy minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah and former old girls Zefi Efiliya Mohd Taib and Ida Borhan.
“Those were the days when TKC were one of the teams to watch out for.
“We just wanted to bring back the glory days and are glad the girls have responded positively to the programme,’’ said Zefi, a former Negri Sembilan state player.
Saifuddin whose daughter Madihah, 16, is also attending the clinic said more girls should be encouraged to take up basketball as the school has three courts to cater for their needs.

DESPITE the unpredictable weather, the turnout for the sixth edition of the AND1 Streetball Challenge first coaching clinic was exceptional.
However, the session held at the USJ6/2B outdoor basketball court and scheduled for 90 minutes, did not go the full distance due to the evening drizzle.

Exceptional turnout: More than 50 budding cagers joined the coaching clinic.

About 50 budding cagers aged between 11 and 21 years showed up to go through the drills under the tutelage of national women’s basketball assistant coach Yoong Sze Yuin.
Yoong said it was a refreshing change for the coaching crew to reach out to the basketball followers from the neighbourhood.
“We were excited about the opportunity to help them to build strong fundamental skills and pursue the game to a higher level. Our aim is also to encourage them to enjoy the game and have fun when they step on the court. Although it was wet day, it did not deter them from coming out in full force,” she added.
The fairer sex took charge of the session as the former national captain Yoong also came with two national women’s cagers — Thoh Chai Ling and Choo Shwok Ping — in tow to demonstrate the moves as they guided the youngsters through the pace.
The 26-year-old Thoh said it was a good experience to share their knowledge with the participants.
“We did not expect them to master the moves in such a short period. But, they definitely gave their best and followed our instructions in executing the drills,” added Thoh.
After executing several ball handling exercises for about 30 minutes, the participants were given the opportunity to have a shot at winning wristbands and balls in the shooting contest before heading for an early shower.
One of the top three performers of the inaugural StarMetro In Search of Freestylists Anirudh Aravind was also present to inspire the participants.
As the buildup to the opening leg at the Summit USJ on April 26, the organisers also took the opportunity to distribute the entry forms to the youngsters.
They can accommodate up to a maximum of 350 teams in six categories — boys’ Under-13, boys’ Under-15, boys’ Under-18, boys’ Under-21, girls’ Under-15 and girls’ Under-18 — to be part of the occasion.
Newcomer Calvin Lim, who took up basketball at the beginning of the year, said he was hoping to feature in the upcoming 3-on-3 basketball meet.
The 11-year-old from SRJK (C) Chee Wen in Subang Jaya also scored a memorable outing and went home with a ball from the three-point shooting contest.

Streetball challenge returns next month

THE popular AND1 Three on Three Streetball Challenge is back! The first leg will be held at the Summit USJ in Subang Jaya on April 26.

To make the challenge a success, the organisers — Ossia World of Golf — will be initiating a series of coaching clinics in the Klang Valley, like it has done in previous years.

Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said they were keen to promote the challenge in the outskirts.

“We want to reach out to the youngsters outside Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya and Klang. We are looking at public courts in Kepong and Rawang.

“We have plans to conduct three coaching clinics as a run-up to the first leg. We will be announcing the dates soon,” Saw said after the launch of the five-leg AND1 Streetball Challenge at the Summit USJ recently.

Ossia World of Golf, in the presence co-sponsors and supporters Milo, FlyFM, Malaysia Basketball Association (Maba), Summit USJ and The Star, unveiled the new red Jersey and the new red ball for the 2009 edition of the AND1 Streetball Challenge.

The second leg will be held in Johor on May 24, the third in Klang on June 28, the fourth in Penang on July 26 and the grand finals at Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 4.

Maba secretary-general Tan See Wah said they were pleased to be associated with the AND1 Streetball Challenge.

“The challenge has played a big part in the promotion and development of basketball at the grassroots level. Ossia World of Golf have been consistent in running this programme, and the Maba is grateful to the organisers for their efforts,” Tan said.

Milo sports marketing manager Ng Ping Loong said they had seen the challenge grow from strength to strength.

“We have been with the challenge since the first year. The challenge brings youngsters together for a healthy activity. The other side events — Beat Box and the In Search of MC Competitions — have also made the challenge an exciting and interesting affair,” said Ng.

The launch was made merrier by the presence of two freestylists, Nabil Ra’uf Harun and Ismadi Hamidi, who showed off their skills. The public also had the opportunity to take part in the shooting hoop competition, and Fly FM announcers Steve and Jules took to the stage and played a game against two youngsters.

OSSIA World of Golf, the organisers of the AND1 3 on 3 streetball challenge, will be going to primary schools to popularise the game.
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said the challenge, launched five years ago, has been successful and generated a lot of interest among youngsters. “Many of the participants who started when they were 13 are now 18 and are still actively taking part in the challenge. “Now we are keen to look at the younger age group and the primary school pupils are our target for the coming years,’’ said Saw. This year’s streetball challenge was held at five venues - Summit USJ, Subang (354 teams); Komtar, Penang (165); Aeon Jusco, Klang (310); Danga Bay, Johor (275) and Berjaya Times Square (420) - and the increased number of teams was an indication of the popularity of the event. Saw also attributed the success to the excellent support from sponsors Milo. “Milo have played a big role in organising side events which attracted the young participants. The participants found the side events interesting and exciting and encouraged them to stay all day,’’ said Saw. The 2009 season is expected to start in March and the grand final is scheduled for July. But Saw said their promotion would start soon.

“We will be conducting coaching clinics at primary schools and public courts. There are a lot of public courts in the Klang Valley. We are looking at the possibility of working with the Residents Associations and Rukun Tetangga sectors towards conducting coaching clinics. “If our plans materialise, then we can expect the primary school pupils to play in the Under-13 age group next season,’’ said Saw.

Streetball finale draws the crowd

THE brief appearance of visiting streetballers from the Ball Star Indonesia added extra excitement to the fifth and final leg of the AND1 Streetball Challenge at the Berjaya Times Square on Sunday.

Although the trio of Bayu Radityo a.k.a Lunatic, Gobel a.k.a Trickz and Okto a.k.a Total Package missed their opening match in the open (non-Chinese) category, they had the chance to thrill the crowd in an exhibition match against the previous winners of the In Search of Freestylists on the main court set up with a special surface for the occasion.
The 29-year-old Bayu said they failed to show up in time to feature in the main competition because they had too much fun at a show a day earlier.

“We came to attend a show. So, we thought it was a good idea to join the challenge. We heard so much about it and we wanted to have a feel of the event. The whole concept is something similar to the MixTape,” said Bayu, who has been an AND1 sponsored player for more than three years. During the lunch break, the Malaysian line up of Nabil Ra’uf Harun, Anirudh Aravind and Samuel Amoh Junior found more competent opponents and were pushed to step up their tempo as both sides attempted to outdo each other in the healthy exchange.
“They definitely tried to match us and gave us a good fight. We had fun playing against them,”said Okto, 24.
Before the organisers started with the Milo In Search of Freestylists and the In Search of Talent contests, last season’s National Basketball League (NBL) Most Valuable Player Chris Kuete from Cameroon also showed up to thrill the crowd with his finesse in executing the slam dunk.
It was also a tight contest in the introduction round of the freestyle competition with 11 of the 12 finalists vying for the six spots to advance to the final one-on-one round.

Among the five eliminated from the preliminary stage were Tan Jue Hang, Tan Soon Chern, Yap Zi Chian, Law Chin Hui and Ong Wei Liang.
Gobel, who was one of the three judges, said most of the finalists had a good understanding of the freestyle concept.
“Juggling is a basic skill in freestyle and most of them could do it quite well,” added Gobel, 24.
In the final round, three seasoned campaigners — Lam Wei Ken, Sheikh Muhammad Afnan and Mohd Ismadi Hamadi — were judged as the top three performers of the season and earned the AND1 products sponsorship worth RM3,000 each.
After failing to clear the final hurdle for the past two years, the 22-year-old Sheikh had a memorable outing.
“Initially, I was quite nervous because it was my last shot to prove myself in the competition.
“After the bitter disappointment of missing out on a top three finish for two consecutive years, I felt very satisfied because I have gone all the way this time,” Sheikh said.

Multimedia and graphic design student Lam, 22, and SM Pandan Jaya student Ismadi, 16, were also among the finalists last year.
“I trained regularly to prepare for the final showdown. Today, the best move was spinning the ball with the chopstick. I tried the same move last year. But, I perfected my ball-handling skills,” said Lam.
In addition, the finalists of the In Search of Talent side event that included rapping, beat boxing and break dancing also drew the spectators’ attention with their showmanship.
Penangites Ma Chun Hoey and Leroy Lee edged two other contenders in their sections to emerge champions in break dancing and beat boxing respectively.
Meanwhile, Nigerian Abdus Salam Muyibi subdued the challenge from Ghanaian Joshua Samuel in a head-on battle for the top spot in the rapping competition.
The champion and runner-up of each segment in the In Search of Talent were rewarded with a Sony PSP and an i-Pod respectively.

Star Publications (M) Bhd chief operating officer (multimedia) Michael Aeria and Milo sports marketing manager Ng Ping Loong gave away the prizes to the winners of the side events conducted in conjunction with the challenge.
The grand finale to the fifth season drew 420 teams in six categories — boys’ under-14, boys’ under-16, boys’ under-18, boys’ under-21, girls’ under-18 and open (non-Chinese).
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said the staunch support from the streetball followers and partners gave them the extra strength to push forward to host the three-on-three basketball event.
“We have dedicated a lot of effort to organise the event for the youngsters to nurture their interest in the game. But, it has always been a joy to see them having so much fun at the challenge,” he added.

Forging ties via streetball

JOHOR BARU: When 18-year-old Chong Liuyi Heng saw the size of his opponents during the AND1 Streetball Challenge, he shivered with apprehension as they towered over him and his team mates.
This is why he could not believe his luck when he and his friends from the Doramon team emerged champion in the finals of the Under-18 category.
“When I saw them, I thought we would be at a disadvantage and was nervous about playing against them.

“They were so tall, definitely above 1.9m compared to our 1.7m,” he said
Despite their nervousness, Chong and his friends gave the game their best shot in the allocated seven minutes.
Doramon emerged 1-0 winners at the end.
“We scored the only goal in a penalty.
“It was scary,” he said of the event at Danga Bay here recently.

Battling it out: The competition was fierce during the challenge.

Runners up and third place winners in the category were Trump Card and Milo respectively while the winners in the Under-16 category were Ice Kacang, The Rotten Lot and Sun respectively.
In the Under-14 category, Miracle, Elusive Dream and Tri O emerged winners respectively.
Present to start the competition was state MCA secretary Hoo Seong Chang who said the such games were a wonderful way for youths to forge closer ties with their peers.
“They can have fun and improve their game in this healthy activity,” he said.
Hoo noted that players of other races participated in the game known to be popular with the Chinese.

“We had 275 teams in Johor Baru this year compared to about 200 last year,” he said.

SAMUEL Omoh Junior, 21, is not a fan of rigid rules on traditional basketball courts, which is why he is drawn to the freestyle elements of streetball (street basketball).
“I didn’t enjoy basketball until I saw the seniors in my high school in Ghana playing streetball.
“Streetball is more interesting and less restrictive,” said the University College Sedaya International management student, who picked up streetball when he was 17.

Omoh Jr has been playing with his college friends and guys from his neighbourhood in Taman Connaught for the past year, and was crowned the AND1 In Search of Freestylist champion last year.
“Basketball is a great way for me to make new friends and serves as an ice-breaker,” he said, admitting that he has become more recognisable and made more friends and fans after his win.
Omoh Jr and Billy Chen, a 20-year-old HELP University College student, were two AND1 Streetball players who were making their rounds during several pick-up games in Klang.
Ossia World of Golf (M) Sdn Bhd will be having a series of pick-up games and coaching clinics that will lead up to the AND1 Streetball Challenge on June 29 at AEON (Jusco) Shopping Mall in Bukit Tinggi, Klang.
“The pick-up game’s concept is similar to the AND1 Mix Tape Tour in the United States, where we have two-on-two or three-on-three on-the-spot games at ball parks in residential areas,” said Ossia World of Golf sales executive Moo Kok Hsiung.

“We’re also distributing entry forms for the challenge and encouraging students to get their schools to sign up for the coaching clinics.
“The coaching clinics are targeted at secondary and primary schools in the Klang Valley. We’ll have coaches, comprising former and current national players, to teach students the fundamental skills of basketball like dribbling, shooting and defence,” he said.
Eddie Lee, 17, was one of the students who planned to get his school to have the coaching clinic soon.
“I took part in the AND1 Streetball Challenge last year, and I hope to sign up for it again this year, depending on time constraints,” said the SMK La Salle, Klang Form Five student.
The Bandar Botanic resident plays basketball with his neighbourhood friends once a week and enjoyed his pick-up game with Omoh Jr.
Lee said he had represented his school at inter-school basketball games and named Boston Celtics' Ray Allen and LA Lakers' Kobe Bryant as his favourite players.
The streetball challenge is divided into six age categories – four for boys and two for girls.
The age groups for boys are Under-13, Under-15, Under-18 and Under -21, while those for girls are the Under-15 and Under-18.
Other activities lined up include competitions for freestyle, emcee, beatbox, breakdance, creative innovation drawing and graffiti, slam dunk demonstrations, interactive games, as well as lucky draws with AND1 products up for grabs.
The entry fee for each team is RM90.
Each participant will receive an AND1 jersey and each team will get an AND1 basketball.

MORE coaching clinics will be held to encourage students to take part in the AND1 3-on-3 Streetball Challenge at the AEON (Jusco) Shopping Mall in Bukit Tinggi, Klang, on June 29.
Ossia World of Golf, the distributors of AND1 brand in Malaysia, had organised three clinics last week in Klang last week. The overwhelming response has prompted the company to initiate another six clinics before the big event.
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said they wanted to have a maximum participation of 350 teams for the third leg of the Streetball Challenge.

THE third leg of the popular AND1 three-on- three Streetball Challenge will be held at the AEON (Jusco) in Bukit Tinggi, Klang on June 29.
As in past years, WCT Land is the venue sponsor for the challenge which is organised by Ossia World of Golf.

WCT Land sales and marketing manager Stewart Tew said they felt privileged to be part of the three-on-three challenge, which was an exciting and interesting event for youngsters.
“This season, the event will be held at the more spacious AEON (Jusco) shopping mall.
“Our support for the challenge is part of WCT Land's CSR programme.
“We want to play an active role in encouraging youngsters to be involved in healthy sporting activities.
“We also urge the public to come in full force to be part of the event. The organisers have lined up a series of events for spectators as well,” said Tew.
The streetball challenge has six age groups – four for boys and two for girls – and the organisers are expecting a maximum of 350 teams. The age groups for boys are Under-13, Under-15, Under-18 and Under -21 while those for girls are the Under-15 and Under-18.
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said they were grateful to WCT Land for being the venue sponsor.
“WCT Land have been our partners for almost five years. The partnership has proven to be a success in creating opportunities for youngsters to be involved in a healthy activity,” said Saw.

IN CONTRAST to the calm on the streets as Subang Jaya’s residents opted to enjoy a typically laidback weekend at home, staunch three-on-three basketball followers generated a lively atmosphere to celebrate a good start to the fifth AND1 Streetball Challenge at the USJ Summit on Sunday.
Even before the official opening ceremony attended by the challenge’s patron Datuk Lee Hwa Beng and Malaysia Basketball Association (MABA) deputy secretary-general Tan See Wah, the youngsters were already in an upbeat mood to get the ball rolling for the new season.
Besides praising the organisers for their efforts to allow the budding cagers to compete regularly, Tan also gave credit to Lee who has contributed immensely to build basketball courts in Subang Jaya during his tenure as assemblyman.

For the opening leg curtain raiser, previous winners from the In Search of Freestylists competitions got the participants all fired up with their appearances on court.
Joining Nabil Ra’uf Harun and Choong Wai Kit from the first edition of StarMetro In Search of Freestylists in 2006 were last season’s Milo In Search of Freestylists winners Nabil Hariz Mohd Ariff and Samuel Amoh Junior from Ghana.
The quartet entertained the crowd with their moves and also accepted challenges from the rookies.
Participants were rewarded before the competition started when the organisers continued their generosity by giving away several prizes including a half pair AND1 signature shoe through lucky draws.
In between the competition, the organisers also provided an area for the participants to embrace the trendy streetball culture.
As they caught a breather from the action on the court, they were given the opportunity to engage in the PS2 MixTape simulation game as well as to catch the action of AND1 MixTape visuals on the two plasma screens and DVD players supplied by LG Electronics.

Rapper Dareyno from Rough Sound Entertainment also conducted three side contests – MC, beat box and break dance – to inject some hip-hop excitement.
Debutant Mamou Kouyate from Modern Arabic School gave a brave display in the first session of the In Search of MC competition.
“I took part in the challenge at the grand finals last year. But, it was my first time joining the In Search of MC contest. I am having fun because the challenge has always been an event for us to get together and enjoy the occasion,” Mamou, 14, said.
Last season’s In Search of MC finalist Ahmad Zaki Nawawi Azharuddin from Victoria Institution was also in the fray to earn a slot for the final showdown.
The 16-year-old student said he had been practising his rhyme and flow to make up for his disappointing outing last year.
“I had a good start today. But, I am not very happy with my performance because I choked towards the end of my routine,” he said.
Although the beat box was an introduction section, several participants rendered respectable performances.
The top three performers in each of the side contests from each leg will advance to the grand finals. Shooting for prizes: Participants enjoying the Milo sports booth during the event.
The champion and runner-up of each contest will receive a Sony PSP and an i-Pod, respectively.
In addition, the Milo In Search of Freestylists also saw many familiar contenders showing great camaraderie as they tantalised the crowd with their ball handling flair.
In the end, the trio of Ahmad Akmal, 16, Mohd Ismadi Hamidi, 16 and Sheikh Muhammad Afnan, 20, secured their berths for the grand finals.
Business administration student Sheikh is hoping to be third time lucky in clearing the final hurdle at the season’s grand finale.
“I was a finalist for the last two seasons. I want to have another crack at being among the top three this year,” Sheikh said.
The finalists will be vying for AND1 products sponsorships worth RM3,000 as the top three freestylists of the season.
The recent challenge drew 354 teams in six categories – boys’ Under-13, girls’ Under-15, boys’ Under-15, girls’ Under-18, boys’ Under-18 and boys’ Under-21.
The next meet is scheduled at Komtar, Penang on May 18.
Before the grand finals at Berjaya Times Square on Aug 17, the two subsequent legs are at Jusco, Klang (June 29), and Danga Bay, Johor (July 27).

Budding cagers brave rain to participate in coaching clinic

DESPITE the wet weather threatening to ruin the prelude to the fifth AND1 Streetball Challenge at the USJ6 Basketball Centre (U6BC) outdoor court in Subang Jaya recently, the modest crowd of budding cagers who had turned up for the launch braved the unrelenting drizzle to join in the action.
Former Philippines national basketball team head coach David Zamar, who led the coaching clinic, said he had initially thought the session would be called off because of the rain.
“The participants, though, were eager to carry on with the programme,” he added.
Zamar, who was guiding the Malaysian NBL side at the South-East Asia Basketball Championships that was held in Indonesia from April 4 to 6, came with four assistants in tow.
They were Benjamin Knight from Australia, Chris Kuete from Cameroon, Anish Balla from Canada and local Lau Er Kheng.

Knight and Kuete were the two imports for the Malaysian NBL side for the regional meet that had four countries – Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia – taking part.
The coaching crew went through the basic ball handling skills, such as dribbling, passing and shooting, with the participants.
The 32-year-old Knight, who plays for the Singapore Slingers in the Australian NBL League, had fun helping the youngsters in performing the drills.
“It is great seeing the children putting in some hard work on the court,” said Knight.
SK Dato Onn Jaafar Year Five pupil Jason Gan went through the paces with the senior players in the group.
Currently, the 11-year-old is training with the U6BC boys' Under-14 squad regularly every Monday and Friday evening.
Jason's mother Carole Gan said her son had shown good progress since taking up basketball last year.
At the launch, Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong and Milo sports marketing manager Ng Ping Loong also unveiled the new stripes and ball for the challenge this season.
Also present was U6BC chairman Loo Chin Oon.
Entertaining the spectators was rapper Dareyno from Rough Sound Entertainment, who rendered his hip tunes.
In addition, last season's In Search of MC champion Jeremy Yap also showed up to engage in freestyle rapping.

This year, the challenge will begin at USJ Summit on April 27.
Before the grand finals at Berjaya Times Square on Aug 17, three legs have been scheduled at Komtar, Penang (May 18), Jusco, Klang (June 29) and Danga Bay, Johor (July 27).
The Red Fighters, comprising Nicholas Choo, 10, Shaqeel Eiman, 11, and Kesavendra Naidu, 12, were among the early birds to sign up for the first leg.
“We are excited about competing in the boys' Under-13 category for the first time,” said Shaqeel, who trains with the U6BC beginners' programme conducted every Sunday morning.
For the opening leg of the three-on-three basketball event, the organisers are expecting a total of 350 teams to compete in six categories – boys' Under-13, girls' Under-15, boys' Under-15, girls' Under-18, boys' Under-18 and boys' Under-21.
The entry fee is RM90 for each team. Each player will receive a jersey and the team will be given a basketball.

THE AND1 Streetball Challenge is back and is set to be more exciting and interesting.
Ossia World of Golf, the distributors of AND1 brand in Malaysia, have lined up four legs culminating with the grand finals in Berjaya Times Square on Aug 17.
The first leg will be at the USJ Summit on April 27. The challenge will then move to Penang at the Komtar on May 18.
The third leg is at Jusco in Klang on June 29 followed by the fourth leg in Danga Bay,Johor Baru on July 27.

BEFORE the final contestant surfaced, it was only an average show at the grand final of Nokia In Search of MC held as part of the finale to the fourth edition of the AND1 Streetball Challenge that concluded with the fifth and final leg at Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur recently.
But, the organisers of the prominent three-on-three basketball event had unintentionally saved the best act for the last.
After a mundane series of entertainment with a few hilarious amusement in between, budding talent Jeremy Yap of SMK Bukit Kemuning had the final say of the day when he exploded into action with commanding flair when he uttered his rhythmic rap lyrics.
“He (Jeremy) flaunted an astounding performance to claim the top prize. We are impressed with his self-initiative to develop his potential. He displayed confidence when he delivered his tune in a very composed fashion. As a re- ward, he will also feature in our Malaysian version of the AND1 theme song,” said rapper Dareyno from Junio Hustle, who served as the mediator for the first edition of the talent quest.
Yap edged seven other finalists and braved the nerve wrecking occasion to claim the top spot.
The 14-years-old SMK Bukit Ke-muning student walked away with RM1,000 and a Nokia Xpress-Music phone for his undisputable feat.
Meanwhile, V. Mogandas, 24 from Johor finished second and collected RM500 followed by Penangite Teh Chong Wei, 18 in third who pocketed RM300. Both also took home a mobile phone each.
Besides cash money, the top three winners also received AND1 products and Junio Hustle CD.
The challenge's organisers are planning to include more ap-pealing side events to get the budding cagers and streetball followers excited about the event next year.
For the past three years, the challenge was hosted with the staunch support from Nokia, Milo and StarMetro.
“We have a few more tricks up our sleeves to elevate the event to another level and share it with the youngsters who are passionate about streetball,” said Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong.
Besides the In Search of MC competition, the organisers are contemplating on conducting the beat box and break dance competitions to provide the avenue for budding performers to discover and showcase their hidden talent.
“Streetball is about hip-hop culture. We want to educate the youngsters with better understanding and awareness on the trendy image. That is the reason we are trying to incorporate each of the hip-hop element step by step as part of the challenge,” added Dareyno.

SINCE the inception of three-on-three basketball events in Malaysia in 1993, basketball players have picked up more skills and the game has become increasingly popular.
This was seen at the AND1 Streetball Challenge Grand Final at Berjaya Times Square yesterday that drew 410 teams from as far away as Penang, Pahang and Johor.
Malaysia Basketball Association deputy secretary-general and national women’s team coach Tan See Wah said the AND1 Streetball Challenge was a great platform for basketball players to develop individual skills.

“I believe that competitions like this have a great impact on players and make them more skilful.
“We encouraged state and national players to take part in three-on-three basketball to gain exposure. It makes players think out for the box,” said Tan, adding that three-on-three competitions are organised abroad on a large scale.
Nestle Products sports marketing manager Ng Ping Loong admitted that he has seen the skill level of the freestylists and players at the AND1 Streetball Challenge grow tremendously.

“The boys and girls here do not need to see the ball when they bounce it. They can feel it and are one with the ball.
“This is why this event is so unique and we are glad to be associated with this challenge,” he said.
Tunku Abdul Rahman College student Ng Wei Ching, 18, said he loved hip-hop but was not good enough for any dance groups so he learnt freestyling for about six months.
“I decided to use my dance moves in basketball and I feel it looks good,” said the Penang-ite.
Lam Wei Ken, 18, a form five student from Chung Hwa Confucian in Penang, said that taking up streetball has made him a better basketball player.
“I have been playing since I was 12-years-old and only learnt about streetball last year. Previously, I was not confident to dribble players. Now, I am not afraid of dribbling any player not matter how tall they are.

“I also joined a school group for freestylists in Penang called Mystical,” said Lam.
Besides the main event which had six categories – girls’ Under-15, boys’ Under-14, boys’ Under-16, boys’ Under-18, boys’ Under-21 and Open (non-Chinese) - there were also Nokia’s In Search of MC competition where four units of the Nokia 5700 and eight units of the Nokia 5300 were given to winners. Cash prizes totalling RM1,800 was also given away.
Milo also had an artificial wall for wall-climbing activities.
StarMetro also had the StarMetro In Search of Freestylists competition with journalist Ng Wei Loon as one of the judges.
StarMetro is the official media, while Nokia is the official mobile phone and Milo the official beverage of the 2007 AND1 3-on-3 Streetball Challenge.

THE organisers are going all out to improve the side activities and make the AND1 Streetball Challenge a lifestyle for youth.
And, it was no exception at the AND1 Streetball Challenge Grand Finals held at Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.

“We want to make the AND1 Streetball Challenge a lifestyle for youth and keep them coming back for more,” said Saw, said.
The AND1 Streetball Challenge grand final was a roaring success with 410 teams taking part in six categories – girls' Under-15, boys' Under-14, boys' Under-16, boys' Under-18, boys' Under-21 and Open (non-Chinese) in this tournament.

Lim said she found the side events, like the StarMetro In Search of Freestylist, very exciting as the players were very skilful.

“My hope is that the organisers will hold an In Search of Freestylists competition for girls next year. I would definitely take part,'' she added.

FREESTYLIST Anirudh Aravind conducted a clinic to give an insight to budding freestylists on how to impress the judges during the Milo In Search of Freestylist challenge at the AND1 Streetball Challenge Grand Final to be held at Berjaya Times Square on Sept 9.

Anirudh, who was one of the three winners last year, told these freestylists that judges are looking for something different.

“They should learn new moves to impress the judges and there are only two weeks before the final. When they do their moves, the crowd should be thrilled.

“During the clinic, I also told the freestylists they have to know the moves of their opponent if they compete one-on-one.

“They have to study their opponent's moves and take away the ball when the opponents does any tricks,” he said.

Anirudh conducted the clinic at the PJ Arena open-air basketball court, opposite Assunta Hospital last Friday (Aug 24).
Nestle Products sport marketing manager Ng Ping Loong said Milo is glad to be associated with In Search of Freestylist event this year.
“We could see these boys are very close-knit. They are not stingy in sharing their skills and tricks with fellow freestylists.
“Although these freestylist dress in hip-hop style, they are very disciplined when it comes to basketball. I have seen these freestylists polishing their skills each time they come for the competition and get even better,” said Ng.
A concurrent event, the In Search of M.C Challenge is supported by Nokia.

MC Challenge finalists get coaching on how to rap spontaneously.
TEMPO, beat, rhythm and rhyming with the right flow are the basic ingredients for freestyle rapping.

That was the gist of the workshop conducted by local rapper Dayreno for 10 finalists of the AND1 Streetball in Search of M.C challenge, supported by Nokia.
The Search of MC Challenge is part of the AND1Streetball Challenge. The 10 finalists will get the chance to show off their skills at the Grand Finals at the Berjaya Times Square on Sept 9
The workshop was to prepare the young finalists between the ages of 13 and 24 on the methods of freestyle rapping which refers to spontaneous rapping without having to write out the lyrics.
During the two-hour session, Dayreno evaluated each contestant based on their sample rapping.
The assessment was to help them to identify their personal styles and to further improve on their shortcomings.
He stressed that pronunciation was important during rapping as it must be understood by people.
At the same time, it was also crucial for a rapper to have rhyming skills with punch lines, as without those, a rap can be flat.
“Rap means rhythm and poetry. So you’ve got to know rhyming. It’s about delivering messages and not reading,” said Dayreno.
Settling on a beat was also a topic during the workshop.
“In freestyle, you can’t go with a heavy tempo because you need to buy time to think.
“Learn how to chill out with the beat and follow the beat. That’s why there are ‘aha’ and ‘yo’ in rapping,” he said as he provided them with his own music material.
On the slang, Dayreno said it was all right to sound Malaysian.
“We are Malaysians. We don’t have to sell very black. We are Malaysians - it’s okay to sound like that,” he said.
The interactive session served as a motivational gathering for the contestants as Dayreno also pointed out their individual capabilities.
Nokia customer and market operations marketing manager Geraldine Wong said the M.C challenge was an exciting new addition to AND1 and it was one way of getting youths to express their enthusiasm.
“The challenge is non-device related, nothing to do with selling hand phones.
“Who knows, some of these boys might become somebody someday,” she said.
Nokia has been supporting AND1 for three years now.
Prizes for the M.C challenge include total cash of RM1,800, Nokia mobile handphones and AND1 products.

More youngsters going in for streetball action

The first leg was held at the Summit USJ on March 26 followed by the second leg at Giant Tampoi in Larkin, Johor on May 26 and Komtar, Penang on June 24. The fourth leg was held at WCT Land office car park in Bandar Bukit Tinggi yesterday.
A total of 300 teams competed in six categories – Girls’ Under-15, Girls’ Under-18, Boys’ Under-13, Boys’ Under-15, Boys’ Under-18 and Boys’ Under-21.

Nigerians Masi Godswill, 18, and Omoare Gilbert Taiwo, 21, from University College Sedaya International (UCSI) joined their friend from Ghana, Samuel Amoh Junior, 21, from Rima College to form a team called Honey Dip to compete in the Boys' Under-21 category here.
Godswill said this was the first time they were taking part in the AND1 Streetball Challenge and were excited over the event.
“Many of the participants here are friendly and look upon our team as a favourite. There is great hip-hop music and the rain in the morning made it cooler for us to play, unlike the usual humid weather.

We left our houses at 5am by cab to be here as early as possible so as not to miss out on the action. We are really looking forward to playing with teams here and gain some experience,'' said Godswill, whose team took part in the University College Basketball League four months ago.

Matthew Lin Deren, 13, who celebrated his birthday on July 29, received a AND1 Shoe and a AND1 Mixed Tape as birthday presents from the organisers during the briefing of players in the morning.
“This is the best birthday present I have received and what better way can there be to celebrate my birthday than with my basketball buddies here,'' said Matthew, a Form One student from Klang High School.
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said the AND1 Streetball Challenge was still going strong with youngsters still wanting to take part in the competition despite an absence of four months.

“We also received overwhelming response at http://www.and1malaysia.blogspot.com/ on the Internet with about 200 members and 10,000 hits.
“From the blog, there are freestylists from Indonesia and the Philippines who will come to Berjaya Times Square next month to challenge some of the Malaysian freestylists. We are looking forward to this,'' said Saw.
Milo conducted the Milo Obstacle Challenge where participants had to control the basketball with a hockey stick while going around 10 cones in the fastest time possible. The winners and losers both received prizes.
At the Nokia booth, there was shooting hoop competition with prizes given away to participants.
The next leg of the streetball challenge will be at Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 9.

THE rain that started at 5am on last Sunday morning did not dampen the spirits of the freestylists and basketball enthusiasts who came for AND1 Streetball Challenge held in Bandar Bukit Tinggi.
As the rain stopped at about 9am, the cool weather created a perfect venue for the people to chill out listening to hip hop music, doing tricks, and take part in the competition that was organised by Ossia World of Golf.

The organiser also invited Cameroon national player Chris Kuevte and national trainee Wee Chuan Chin to show some of their moves while the participants watched in awe. Last year’s freestyle winners – Choong Wai Kit, 19; Nabil Ra’uf Harun, 18, and Anirudh Aravind, 17 – were present to show newcomers that basketball was “more than just shooting hoops” and to wow them with their skills and fancy footwork. This year, the category had four new faces – Ismail Hamidi, Wayne Ooi, Khairul Anwar and Samuel Amoh Junior – who were picked as winners. Together with the four, a total of 16 players will compete in the AND1 Streetball Challenge Grand finals to be held in Berjaya Times Square on Sept 9.

This season, the top three freestylists of the year will receive RM3,000 worth of AND1basketball product sponsorship, a Nokia mobile phone and a Milo hamper each.
One of the highlights of the competition was the In Search of M.C. Challenge, which offered participants the chance to show off their talents in rapping and hip-hop.
Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said that the competition gave the participants opportunities to play, meet new people, demonstrate their skills, express themselves, and have fun.
“In fact, the winners of last year are now like celebrities as I saw them signing autographs earlier. Most of the youth here want to be in their shoes.
“We want to be different from other organisers. We are looking at roping in freestylists from Indonesia and Philippines to make this an international event for the grand finals in Berjaya Times Square.
“Currently, we are looking at ways to make this event bigger, better and more challenging next year,” he said
