Sizzling end to AND1 challenge

The Under-21 men’s team displayed a showdown of skills and stamina as team Talk To Me won by one precious point against team V3 in the grand finals of AND1 3-on-3 Streetball Challenge.

The intense game, held at Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur, took only five minutes to settle the score between the finalists in which team V3 failed to equalise the score and force the “golden ball” opportunity before the buzzer went off, ending the match with a 2-1 lead in favour of team Talk To Me.

Talk To Me’s defense was difficult to penetrate and it hindered team V3 from getting close enough to the basket, making them rely on shots from afar to gain points.

The champion’s team captain Teng Seng Fu, 20, who teamed up with Chan Shi Hong, 20 and Ong Men Kien, 21, said they worked extra hard to earn the title.

“V3 is a strong opponent and our skills are evenly matched.

“We had to guard them closely as they are good shooters,” said the 20-year-old captain.

In the Under-18 girls finals, team Survival Girls 18 showed complete domination over team BLB1, who had defeated team MCA in the semi finals.

The winning team stretched the game to a huge lead before securing a 7-2 victory.

Their skills were unmatched as team Survival Girls 18 pulled off several accurate jump-shots and excellent passes to top the helpless BLB1.

Meanwhile in the Under-13 boys, Banting Boys A proved to be the better team when they narrowly escaped with a 3-2 victory over Banting Boys B.

More than 450 teams participated in the 10th edition AND1 Streetball Challenge and started the game in the round robin format before proceeding into the knock-out stages.

Event organiser, Ossia World of Golf executive director Saw Swee Leong said the event was successful and on the right track to promote basketball among youths.

“There were more than 300 teams in last year’s AND1 Challenge, but this year there were a lot more teams who showed interest.

“The one-day event has definitely achieved its objective to rope in youngsters to play basketball.

The Slam Dunk competition was won by Shi Hong from team Talk To Me and Eugene Eng from team NGU of the under-15 boys category.

AND1 basketball players Bernard Yap, Teng Seng Fu, Loh Khee Yong were also crowned the In Search of Streetball competition and will become the ambassadors for the AND1 Streetball Challenge next year.

The AND1 Streetball Challenge is an event sanctioned by the Malaysian Basketball Association.

StarMetro is the official media partner of the tournament, Milo the official beverage sponsor, One FM the official radio and Spalding the official ball.
